More Than 100 Persons Feared Dead As Boko Haram Hits Two State Capitals, Damaturu And Maiduguri

In what appears like the upping the ante of attacks, the Boko Haram insurgents on Monday launched multiple and nearly simultaneous attacks on the capitals of Borno and Yobe States, Maiduguri and Damaturu respectively, with co-ordinated bomb explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State capital and gun attacks in Damaturu, Yobe State capital leaving behind trails of spluttered blood and mangled flesh.
More than 100 persons were feared dead in the attacks as several places, including police formations, were burnt. Damaturu is 135 km west of Maiduguri.
The two bombs went off at mid-morning in the same place where another two explosions had killed 35 people last week in an attack carried out by female suicide bombers.
In Damaturu, residents in the Gujba Road area of the city were jolted out of bed by the sound of gunshots and explosions at about 4:45 am as many fled.
Umar Sada who lives in Gujba road of Damaturu said, "I was woken by huge blasts and the sound of heavy gunfire around the Mobile Police barracks. The gunmen came in numbers. They burnt down the Police barracks. They are now advancing towards two housing estates. We have left our home. We are now in the bush. We don't know what's going to happen."
Another local resident, a government official who spoke anonymously said, "It's chaos all over the town. All I can hear are explosions and gunfire from my house. I couldn't go out for morning prayers because this started before dawn and I'm afraid to leave in case I get caught up in it."
But the Yobe State Police Commissioner, Marcus Danladi, said they were dealing with a "serious situation". Vigilantes in the city claimed that more than 40 Boko Haram fighters were killed.
A staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu said the fighting was still raging by mid-morning and some shells had landed in the school compound.
Other residents said fighting was taking place near detention facilities where Boko Haram suspects were being held near the state governor's residence, and the jets were bombarding the militants.
The fresh attacks in Damaturu were targeted at Police and military formations as well as selected houses, a situation that sources said left many people dead.

A baby girl born by a house maid  in Lagos State, western Nigeria, has caused a fight between two women over who among them should take custody of the baby.
The maid lived with a man, Oyekale Oladele and his wife Ngozi, who have been seeking to have a baby for years to no avail.
Trouble started after Mrs Evelyn Njoku reportedly brought the 15-year old mother of the baby to live with Oyekale Oladele and his wife Ngozi, in Lagos and Oladele allegedly impregnated the maid.
Sources said after she became pregnant, the couple did not allow Mrs. Njoku to see her.
The pregnant maid was allegedly hidden by Ngozi and her husband at FAAN staff quarters at Murtala Mohammed International Airport where both families reside.
When Njoku later discovered that the girl was still in Oladele’s flat, she was already heavily pregnant.
She reported the matter to the police and Oyekale and Ngozi were arrested and charged to court with abduction and unlawfully impregnating the girl.
It was gathered that the girl was later delivered of the baby and both families gave her different names. One called her Favour and the other Amarachi.
Though there is no DNA test yet to ascertain the paternity of the baby, Oyekale claimed that he was responsible for the pregnancy and therefore the baby belongs to him.
Mrs Njoku said that Oyekale cannot claim the baby because he was not legally married to the teenager. She insisted that the baby belongs to her because she is the maid’s guardian.
Mrs. Njoku later took custody of the baby and the mother until Oyakale and Ngozi reportedly abducted the baby and the mother and brought her back to their house. The matter was again reported to the police and the couple was re-arrested and charged to Family Court with abduction of the mother and the baby under the Criminal Code.
When they were arraigned, they pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs K.B. Ayeye granted Oyekale and Ngozi bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum. They were remanded in custody pending when they will fulfill their bail condition. The matter was adjourned till 8 December, 2014.
