One of the highway managers in Ilorin,
the Kwara State capital, was feared dead on Thursday, while four others
sustained varying degrees of injuries after a Toyota Corolla car rammed
into them at Agric Junction on Thursday.
The street sweepers were said to be
resting after sweeping the streets for the day when they were hit by the
car with registration number, EP 550 AP.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that
the driver of the vehicle, whose name had yet to be ascertained as at
the time of filing the report, was using his mobile phone while driving
and lost concentration.
The source added that when the driver
found out that he was about hitting a truck with registration number, KW
63 A 36, used to cart refuse, he quickly swerved to the right side of
the road to avoid the truck, but eventually hit five of the women who
were resting by the roadside.He was said to have escaped.
The five women were said to have been
rushed to a private hospital, but were referred to the University of
Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
A source, who pleaded anonymity at the
UITH, said, “One of the injured women died before reaching the hospital.
He was confirmed dead on arrival.
She added that one of the victims
sustained a serious injury and had been admitted in the hospital, while
the other three injured victims were discharged after treatment.
The Kwara State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the accident.
He stated that a woman died while four others were injured as a result of the accident. He added that no arrest had been made.
