No fewer than 15 people have been killed in another suicide attack at a motor park in Potiskum, Yobe State.
It was gathered that a suicide bomber, who disguised as a commuter
yesterday, detonated explosive devices at Tashan Dan Borno motor park at
about 11.45am.
Residents said the bomber, who alighted from a tricycle opposite the
scene of the blast, walked into the busy motor park along Kano Road in
Potiskum like other commuters unknown to many that he had a mission to
accomplish.
“He boarded a waiting Toyota bus with registration number Kano
XA952DBT like other passengers and few minutes later, a loud sound of
explosion from the man,” Ali Zakari, a commercial driver in Potiskum
told Daily Sun on phone.
He said the suicide bomber set off the explosive devices in the park that was crowded at that period.
According to him, there was confusion in and around the park as soon
as the bomb went off, adding that rescuers went to the scene some minute
later to evacuate affected persons.
“I saw about 10 corpses being evacuated from the scene after the blast, while many people sustained injuries,” he added.
A source at the Potiskum General Hospital said 15 dead bodies were
deposited at the hospital yesterday afternoon while over 50 people were
injured. Another medical personnel at the hospital expressed fear that
the casualty figure may rise “due to critical condition of some injured
people.”
The yesterday blast came barely three days after a female bomber blew
herself up and killed six others at a local commercial centre where GSM
accessories were sold in the town. A Boko Haram suicide bomber had
previously killed eight people in the same centre, while another killed
two policemen when he set off Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at a
police station in the town.
An explosion by a male Boko Haram bomber had also killed four at a
restaurant while six were killed in similar blast near a politician’s
house, an indication that Boko Haram had stepped up bomb attacks in the
restive town since late 2014.
